The Cancer Institute (WIA) paid tribute to Dr. V. Shanta, a pioneering figure in cancer care, during a Memorial Oration on Mar.15. Dr. Shanta was celebrated for her clinical expertise, compassion, and lifelong dedication to patients, leaving behind an inspiring legacy in oncology.

The program featured speeches by Dr. M. K. Srinivasan (Former Director, Public Health Centre) and N.L. Raja (Senior Advocate, Chairman of Cancer Institute) who highlighted Dr. Shanta’s contributions and her commitment to the institution’s service-oriented mission. Colleagues, including Dr. Hemanth Raj (Vice Chairman), Dr. Kalpana Balakrishnan (CEO and Director), and Dr. Arvind Krishnamoorthy (Professor and Head of Department, Surgical Oncology), shared personal reflections on Dr. Shanta’s influence on their careers.

The event also included the presentation of long service awards to staff members and awards to top-performing students from the Cancer Institute (WIA) College of Oncological Sciences. The oration concluded with a pledge to continue Dr. Shanta’s legacy through dedicated patient care and cancer research.

Earlier that day, an academic wing was jointly inaugurated by Prashanth Vasu (Managing Director, Coordination & Review – The Sanmar group) and S.Seetharaman (Executive Chairman, Super Auto Forge) to further Dr. V. Shanta’s vision of advancing education in cancer care. The ceremony was attended by donors, medical professionals, former colleagues, patients, caregivers, and well-wishers, all gathered to honour Dr. Shanta’s life and work, particularly her commitment to providing quality care to the underprivileged.
