Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission announces new Electricity tariffs

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has approved a tariff hike proposed by TANGEDCO, effective from July 1, 2024. Here are the key details of the tariff hike and its impact:

  • Domestic consumers will face an increase of Rs.0.20 to Rs.0.50 per unit across different consumption slabs.
  • Consumers using up to 200 units for two months will see an increase of Rs.5 per month.
  • Consumers using up to 300 units for two months will face an increase of Rs.15 per month.
  • Consumers using up to 400 units for two months will experience an increase of Rs.25 per month.
  • Consumers using up to 500 units for two months will face an increase of Rs.40 per month.

Multi-tenements (Small Apartments):

  • Energy charges for common facilities in multi-tenements (residential buildings with up to 3 floors and no lift) are increased to Rs.8.55 per unit from Rs.8.15 per unit.
  • Fixed charges are increased to Rs.107 per kilowatt per month from Rs.102 per kilowatt per month.

Few other salient features of the new tariff include 

  • Approximately 1 crore out of 2.47 crore household and cottage electricity consumers in Tamil Nadu will not be impacted by the tariff hike.
  • All households will receive a free subsidy up to 100 units, and cottage connections will receive free electricity.
  • Domestic electricity consumers are exempted from maintenance fees ranging from Rs.20 to Rs.50 for two months, fulfilling Election Promise No. 222.
  • Electricity subsidies for cottage industry, agriculture, handloom, power loom cultivators, and low voltage industries will continue to be provided.
  • The tariff will increase by only 20 paise per unit for Small and Micro Power Consumers:
  • For Powerloom Consumers, Free electricity will continue to be provided up to 1000 units; from 1001 to 1500 units, the tariff will increase by 20 paise per unit, and Above 1501 units, the tariff will increase by 25 paise per unit.
