The residents of the Sri.P.Obul Reddy Senior Citizens Home, Andhra Mahila Sabha, celebrated the birth anniversary of Durgabai Deshmukh on July 14. The residents said a prayer and conducted a few activities and speeches to mark the event.
The Medical Director Dr.K.J.Jayakumar, Committee Member Lavanya and a resident of the home – Haripriya, highlighted and recounted the various aspects of the life of Durgabai Deshmukh – her remarkable achievements during the freedom struggle and the social causes she strived for, including the construction of the different blocks of the Andhra Mahila Sabha and the organising of the salt-satyagraha movement at the Marina beach.
“When it was proposed to erect her statue, she stated her desire to have a statue of mother and child instead. Dr. Radhakrishnan unveiled the statue. To this day, it stands as a symbol of her commitment to promote the health and education of women and children,” said a statement from the hospital.
Shabari Sairam, a resident of the home, drew a picture of Durgabai Deshmukh with the letters of her first name, and everyone pasted a sticker of their pranams on her photo.
