The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has issued a comprehensive advisory for Deepavali 2025, urging the public to celebrate a noiseless and smoke-pollution-free festival. Following directives from the Supreme Court, the state government has strictly enforced time limits and promoted the use of green crackers to mitigate the severe health and environmental impact of fireworks.

Strict Time Windows for Bursting Crackers

To reduce noise and air pollution, the Government of Tamil Nadu has permitted bursting crackers only during two specific one-hour windows:

  • Evening: 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM

This measure aligns with the Supreme Court’s 2018 judgment, which mandated manufacturers to switch to green crackers—fireworks formulated with raw materials that significantly reduce emission levels.

Key Guidelines for a Safe and Green Deepavali

The TNPCB is raising public awareness through extensive outreach programs involving schools, colleges, Eco clubs, and local authorities. The public is strongly urged to follow these Do’s and Don’ts:

DO’s:

  • Use low-polluting, low-sound-generating green crackers.
  • Organise community fire cracking in designated common places with permission from local bodies/Welfare Associations.

DON’Ts:

  • Avoid bursting joint (series) fire crackers, which create excessive noise.
  • Do not burst crackers in silent areas such as hospitals, schools, courts, and religious places.
  • Avoid bursting crackers near huts and other fire-prone areas.

The Government of Tamil Nadu made a sincere appeal for the public to transform Deepavali into a “festival of light” and celebrate safely with family and friends, protecting both public health and the environment.
