Chennai bus stops get safety and lighting upgrade

The Greater Chennai Corporation has launched a citywide initiative to revamp bus stops along major routes. As part of this, encroachments have been cleared, and intensive cleaning and maintenance work is underway. Special attention is being given to enhance safety and facilities for women and children.

To improve visibility and ensure commuter safety, the Corporation is installing two LED tube lights at every bus shelter across Zones 1 to 15. In the first phase, 614 out of 685 bus stops located near existing streetlights have already been equipped. The remaining will be completed shortly.

In the second phase, 353 bus stops without nearby power sources will receive new electric meters and connections for lighting. These installations are expected to be completed by the end of July.

Additionally, 637 shelters maintained under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model will be equipped with lights by the respective contractors.

This initiative aims to transform Chennai’s bus stops into well-lit, clean, and secure spaces for all commuters.
