Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, on July 3, inaugurated a state-of-the-art Urban Wellness Centre at Sastri Nagar, Chennai, marking the launch of 208 such centres across the state. Constructed at a cost of ₹52 crore, these wellness centres are part of the government’s larger mission to strengthen primary healthcare delivery under the ‘Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam’ initiative.
In a virtual event held at Sastri Nagar, the Chief Minister also launched 50 newly built Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across rural and semi-urban Tamil Nadu, built at a cost of ₹60 crore. The event was attended by the Minister for Health and Family Welfare – Ma. Subramanian, senior IAS officers, and local dignitaries.
Each Urban Wellness Centre, staffed with a doctor, nurse, and health personnel, is designed to serve up to 25,000 residents and will provide 12 essential services, including maternal and child care, elderly care, mental health support, non-communicable disease screening, and referrals.

This inauguration forms the second phase of a broader plan to establish 708 Urban Wellness Centres in Tamil Nadu, with the first 500 having been launched in June 2023. The centres are also digitally connected via the e-Sanjeevani platform for seamless teleconsultation services.
With these additions, Tamil Nadu aims to make quality healthcare more accessible, especially in underserved areas, cementing its role as a leader in public health innovation and equity.
