Madras Youth Choir (MYC) conducted its annual inter-school choral music competition on Feb.3 at TEACH Auditorium, Taramani. The competition saw the enthusiastic participation of over 280 students from Chennai schools in the junior and senior categories.

The songs were on a range of subjects from environmental protection to national integration and in different Indian languages. The children captivated the audience and the panel of judges comprising eminent musicians – Vijayalakshmi Subramaniam, Bhushany Kalyanaraman and Vasantha Valli with their melodious and expressive singing. Special mention must be made of the song on Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, sung by Bhaktavatsalam Vidyashram.

T Nagar Primary School children also stood out in the junior category with their joyful singing. AMM School presented their song in the traditional folk style.

The judges expressed their happiness with the song selection and presentation of the participants. They complimented the children and teachers on their hard work and rigorous practice. The task of selecting the prize winners was indeed difficult given the high standard of each and every performance.

The prize winners in the junior category were Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan (KK Nagar), Lalaji Memorial Omega International School and NSN Memorial Sr. Sec. School. In the senior section, Padma Seshadri (KK Nagar) took first place followed by Saraswathy Vidyalaya and Omega International.

Thanking the schools for their participation, S. Ram, Secretary, MYC, said that the organisation aims at popularising the genre of Indian Choral Music through its performances and its teaching program for students and teachers. “MYC spreads the messages of patriotism, human values, national integration and love for languages through its songs, following the footsteps of its founder, late M B Srinivasan,” said a statement from them. P.C Ramakrishna, President – MYC, delivered the vote of thanks. The prize distribution is to take place on Mar.9, which is M.B Srinivasan’s Memorial Day.
