The Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (TNDPHPM) has once again reassured the public that there is no need for panic regarding COVID-19 infections in Tamil Nadu. Dr. T.S. Selvavinayagam, Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, on May 27, reiterated that the situation does not constitute a pandemic or a public health emergency.
Dr. Selvavinayagam clarified that currently, only around 10-15 COVID-19 cases are being reported per day, and all are categorised as non-malignant infections with no virulent effects. Crucially, there have been no admissions due to severity or any fatalities. “It has been diagnosed as a simple respiratory tract infection, thus, there is no need for fear,” he stated.
He emphasised that while the virus has not been eliminated and will recur periodically, it remains manageable. The state and central governments are diligently monitoring the situation. Furthermore, Whole Genome Sequencing has been conducted to check for variants, with samples sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune. The analysis confirmed no new variants, only the existing Omicron and its sub-lineage.
“We only need to approach it scientifically,” Dr. Selvavinayagam advised. He urged individuals experiencing COVID symptoms, especially those with co-morbidities, to seek medical attention. The public is also reminded to remain vigilant and practice good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette (covering the mouth while sneezing and coughing).
The TNDPHPM confirmed that no additional restrictions are currently necessary, and the government will provide any further information or updates as needed. Tamil Nadu remains fully prepared with all necessary facilities and transport to manage any situation.
