First-ever open-air arena for Boxing, at Kotturpuram

The first open-air boxing arena with a spectator hall has been set up at the Chennai Corporation Sports Ground on Aerikarai (Lake View) Road in Kotturpuram. The project, built from the ward fund of K.R.Kathir Murugan – Councillor of Ward 170 at Rs 24.4 lakhs, was inaugurated by Ma. Subramanian, State Minister of Health and Family Welfare, on Feb.13. Post inauguration, an exhibition boxing match was also conducted.

1. It is the first open-air boxing arena in Chennai.

2. The strategic placement of an open spectator hall adjacent to the boxing arena provides a significant advantage.

3. It is the first boxing platform made accessible to both – boxers and fans, by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) since the establishment of the Tamil Nadu Boxing Association in 1960.

4. It can accommodate over 250 spectators.

5. It is the 4th permanent boxing platform established in Chennai since 1960.

Also present at the inauguration were: R.Durairaj – the Chairman of Adyar Zone, K.R. Kathir Murugan, Pon. Baskaran – The President of the Tamil Nadu Boxing Association, M.S. Nagarajan – The Acting Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Boxing Association, V. Devarajan – Olympian Sports Officer (Southern Railway), Dr. Hari Sankar Varma Raja – Indian Olympic Boxing Team Physio (London 2012), T. Deviselvam – President of Tamil Nadu Physical Education Teachers and Directors Association.

And other secretaries of the Tamil Nadu Boxing Association, sports enthusiasts, coaches, international boxers, senior boxing coaches, and national and international referees. This event has been conceptualised and coordinated by Victory Sports Foundation, Triplicane.
