Chess Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand, on May 1, inaugurated the ‘Siruvar Magizhchi Maiyam’, a children’s recreation centre, at Kotturpuram.
Initiated by the Councillor of Ward 170, K.R. Kathirmurugan, the centre provides a safe and engaging space for children to participate in indoor games and creative activities. The grandmaster also played a game of chess with the children and encouraged them.

The centre will offer a range of options, including chess, carrom, scrabble, puzzles, pallankuzhi, colouring books with crayons, and LEGO blocks. “It is intended to serve as a community hub where children can spend time constructively, away from the world of the internet,” stated the councillor. The Councillor also thanked Visalakshi Palaniappan, Valli Azhagappan, Shefali Kartari and Aruna Vishwanathan, who helped in the initiative.
The centre is located on the 2nd floor of the councillor’s office near the Anna Centenary Library signal and will be open to the children from 5 pm to 7 pm.
