The Greater Chennai Corporation conducted a monsoon preparedness meeting for Zone 13, at Velachery on Oct.9. Unlike the previous meeting (Sep.23), officials from all other departments (EB, CMRL, CMWSSB etc.) were present at the meeting, headed by Minister Ma. Subramanian (Minister for Health and Family Welfare of Tamil Nadu). Also present were the Ward Councillors, Chairman R.Durairaj, Velachery MLA J.M.H.Aassan Maulaana, Deputy Mayor M.Magesh Kumar, and others.
Zonal Officer (Zone 13) P.V.Srinivasan explained about the efforts taken by the Corporation to combat flooding this season:
- Most parts of the city canals and the Adyar River have been cleared and desilted. Clearing the rest is on a war footing;
- Expediting relaying of roads that have been milled;
- Pumpsets have been acquired and kept ready for contingencies. At flood-prone areas, the pumpsets have been placed at a raised level as well;
- In areas where CMRL work is ongoing, pumpsets are being kept ready;
- Jet rod machines are also kept on standby for sewage issues;
- All wards are to have a relief centre, equipped with a kitchen.
The residents also voiced their concerns, some of which included desilting of SWD, illegal sewage let out into SWD, sewage backflow, creating buffer zones around lakes, clearing of canals etc.
