Sakambari Women’s Group, Indira Nagar celebrated International Women’s Day and the group’s 22nd annual day on Mar.9. About 40 women comprising members and others in the neighbourhood participated.
The function began with a special welcome song rendered by Raji Rao and the members. Dr.Santhi Sukumar explained the significance of Women’s Day. Githa Kriparamanan presented the annual newsletter explaining the activities undertaken by the Group. Nine senior women and one physically challenged woman were honoured on the occasion. Each one of them was given a donation consisting of a saree, a bedsheet, a medical kit consisting of essential medicines, and a kit of toiletries.
Pramila Rao and Mathangi Ram rendered the Thirupugazh, Vasantha Rajamanickam related an interesting story highlighting the need for the youth to respect and help old women. The importance of physiotherapy for knee and hip problems was explained by Physiotherapist Shiley. Krithika Kishore elaborated on the beneficial effect of some of the exercises on the bones and muscles.
The chief guest S.Uthira, Headmistress of Chennai Middle School, Gandhigramam, Thiruvanmiyur, emphasised that women’s education is important for women empowerment.
