The Theosophical Society (TS) in Besant Nagar inaugurated a Blue Green Centre (BGC) on Apr.25, as part of its Adyar Eco Development project. Located behind the Olcott Memorial Higher Secondary School, the BGC is a collaborative effort between TS, Pitchandikulam Forest (Auroville) and Asian Paints. It aims to offer transformational, hands-on environmental education to students of Olcott School and the broader community.
The inauguration ceremony was led by Tim Boyd, International President of the Theosophical Society, and attended by key members of TS, educators from neighbouring schools, and community leaders in restoration ecology and climate science.
“A Blue Green Centre is about remembering the future garden. The garden is for the children, the community, and particularly for Olcott School,” said Joss Brooks, Director of Pitchandikulam Forest.
President Tim Boyd added, “This Blue Green Centre is an effort that necessarily involves the greater community, and as this process of community building progresses, it gives hope for the future.”
Students from Nadukuppam Government School—home to the first Blue Green Centre—presented innovative eco-projects, including green refrigerators, seed balls, solar panels, organic mosquito coils, and demos on deforestation and cellphone tower impacts. Their insight and eloquence impressed attendees and illustrated the power of peer learning and exchange programs within the BGC network.
“This is the first private management school to have a Blue Green Centre nearby, where the children will learn about our local ecosystem,” said Dr. Lourde Epinal, Education Programme Head, Pitchandikulam Forest.
“Our educators team also hope to work with nearby schools, targeting youngsters to guide them in practical ecology, which includes offering various programs and hands-on activities like demo nurseries, tree planting, vegetable gardens, biodiversity surveys, trips to restoration sites, and promoting traditional art forms to convey environmental messages,” Dr. Lourde added.
