South India mourned the passing of veteran actress Saroja Devi on July 13, a household name who graced the Tamil film industry for decades. In a heartfelt tribute, the Besant Nagar Beach Gnanadoss Fan Club held a lively singing session at Elliot’s Beach on July 14, dedicating an hour to her evergreen cinematic legacy.
Saroja Devi, renowned as a character artiste, dominated Tamil cinema in the 1960s and 70s, famously starring opposite legends like Dr. MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, and Gemini Ganesan. Her expressive eyes and captivating smile were her hallmarks, allowing her to convey a myriad of emotions.
During the hour-long session, nine participants from the fan club sang approximately 15 songs exclusively from her memorable films, including classics like Kalyana Parisu, Padakotti and Parthal Pasi Theerum.
Incidentally, Saroja Devi was a resident of the Adyar neighbourhood in the 1960s and 70s, residing in a palatial bungalow in Gandhinagar. Through her timeless films and songs, she will continue to live in the hearts of her fans forever.
