Rotary International District 3233, in collaboration with Exnora International Foundation and the National Green Corps (NGC), organised a Plastic Bag Free Awareness Walk on Aug.9 at Elliot’s Beach. The event, supported by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), aimed to educate the community on the environmental dangers of single-use plastics.
The walk began at the police booth and ended at the TNPCB’s Manjappai Kiosk. Over 100 students, 160 Rotarians, NGO representatives, and government officials participated. Led by District Governor Rtn. D. Devendran, a key part of the event, was a mass pledge where participants vowed to avoid plastic bags and adopt eco-friendly habits. An online e-pledge was also launched to allow wider public participation. Additionally, awareness sessions were conducted for students to instil a sense of environmental responsibility from a young age.
Rtn. R. Balasubramanian, stated that the event inspires “meaningful behavioural change towards a plastic-free future.” Over 3,000 Rotary-branded cloth bags were distributed.
