A.K.Shashveen Lifts 23rd Adyar Times Chess Trophy in Four-Way Tie

A.K. Shashveen, an eighth-grade student from Sri Chaitanya Techno School, Pallavaram, emerged as the champion of the prestigious 23rd Adyar Times FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament, 2025. A.K. Shashveen, an eighth-grade student from Sri Chaitanya Techno School, Pallavaram, emerged as the champion of the prestigious 23rd Adyar Times FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament, 2025.

The four-day event, held at D.B. Jain College, Thoraipakkam, concluded with Shashveen outwitting E.Kavin in the final round to secure 7 points from 8 rounds. Although four players tied for first position, Shashveen was declared the winner based on his superior Buchholz score.

The champion received the glittering Adyar Times trophy and a winner’s purse of Rs. 35,000. Two-time champion T. Hari Ganesh, also finishing with 7 points, was the runner-up, followed by A. Lukesh in third place.

The tournament attracted a strong international field of 384 players drawn from four countries (India, Korea, Malaysia, and the USA) and nine Indian states. A total cash prize of Rs. 2.5 lakhs was distributed among 55 prize winners, with attractive trophies being awarded across different age group categories.

The valedictory function was presided over by J.P. Janakan, Managing Editor of Adyar Times, who encouraged the participants to also adopt outdoor games to improve their stamina and concentration power. Sankara Narayanan, IRS, Additional Commissioner of Customs, was the chief guest. Dignitaries present included officials from the Tamil Nadu Chess Association and International Arbiter S. Paul Arokia Raj, the Chief Arbiter of the tournament.

  • 6.5 Points: E. Kavin, AFM S. Vakeesh, Sivan S.Roshan, S. Chandra Prakash, Ragavan Samarth Rajesh, IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam, Prajit Ravishankar.
  • 6 Points: AIM D. Krithin Durai, AFM Praneeshwar Madhavan, M. Kiruthik Murugun, AFM R.Mohamed Thaariq, G.M. Ram Kumar, S.R. Kanishk, Prahalad Moola, Varchas Krishna Jayaraman, P. Pranav Mukunth, S.P. Sriram Pandi, R. Lakshanaa.
  • 5.5 Points: K. Sai Sree Rohit, Shravan Sriram, L. Jaison Enoch, ACM V. Sai Krishna, M. Manish, Pranav Ramkumar, S. Neil Franclin, R. Amarnath, M. Sairam Bala, AFM B. Adyar Times was established in Chennai in the year 1993, founded by Mr.S.P.Ambrose, IAS (Retd.). The concept of a newspaper for the neighbourhood was a novel idea then. The English weekly (Sunday) now boasts a circulation of 42000 copies with an average of 16 pages per issue.
