Closure of toll gate at Navalur imminent

OMR is the second most expensive toll road in India – at the rate of almost Rs. 5 per km. Sadly the citizens are paying this HUGE rate for a road that has barricades, bad road quality, absence of streetlights and blinding construction lights from CMRL worksites, is very unfair, writes FOMRRA to the Tamilnadu Chief Minister.

FOMRRA (Federation of OMR Resident Associations ) sends a letter to the CM  regarding the ‘Removal of Toll Gate in Navalur – OMR’.  FOMRRA  represents the interests of over 150 apartment associations, with over 40,000 homes and 3,00,000 citizens who live around OMR. This letter explained the plight of the Gated Communities / Resident Welfare Associations after the  Metrorail work started. The letter was a gentle reminder to the CM of the protest, organised by DMK party members in December in 2020, wherein MP Tamizhachi Thangapandian, and MLA Aravind Ramesh had been present. The party had said that the protest manifested people’s anger.

Tn State Highways minister @evvelu had asked Union Minister @nitin_gadkari to close 5 toll gates around Chennai, some of which are 20+ km from @chennaicorp limits.

As per the policy doc we should be paying toll for 6 lane highway for 20km. Can someone come and show us where this 6 lane highway exists? @CMOTamilnadu @mkstalin @evvelu @cmrlofficial @KN_NEHRU @ThamizhachiTh @S_AravindRamesh @VckBalaji #tnrdc pic.twitter.com/6BekdvbpQf

There was partial relief in August 2021, when the highways minister E V Velu, announced  the closing of 4 or 5 gates, citing the start of the construction work by Metro Rail as a reason. The 6th gate continues to function, creating chaos in traffic. The tariff also is very exorbitant considering the bad condition of roads. The width of the 4 lane roads creates a snag in the movement of traffic. Also, the length of the road is only 7 kms. Also, Navalur Toll Plaza Plaza is a mere 1 km from the Greater Chennai Corporation limits, explained the letter.

The letter urged the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, to take prompt action and address the concerns of the citizens and bring  their nightmare to an end.
