The 22nd edition of the Adyar Times FIDE-rated open chess tournament will be held from Aug.23 to 26 at Jeppiaar University, OMR Road, Semmancherry, Chennai. 

Sponsored by Adyar Times, the neighbourhood newspaper, this annual event organised by the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association has become globally popular. The total prize fund is Rs. 2.5 lakhs with the champion’s share of Rs. 35,000. There are a total of 40 main cash prizes apart from various category prizes based on the FIDE rating. To encourage the children to participate in this FIDE-rated event, the organizers have announced attractive trophies in the age groups of 8, 10, 12 and 14, separately for boys and girls. Apart from this, special prizes for veterans, women and specially-abled will be awarded.

International Masters, FIDE masters and young international stars are all set to participate in this four-day event. Players from Dubai, France, Singapore, the U.S.A. and the U.K. have appeared in the various editions. Players who have all participated in the previous years have all benefitted in a great way by enhancing their FIDE ratings. The champions of the Adyar Times FIDE-rated open chess tournament conducted over the various years have grown up to the level of international stature.

The tournament is open to all for all age group categories. All the participants must be registered with the All India Chess Federation. Tamil Nadu State Chess Association player registration is compulsory for all Tamil Nadu players. 

The tournament is free for GMs, WGMs, IMs, and WIMs. The entry fee for the tournament is Rs. 1250/- payable by cheque or D.D. to Tamil Nadu State Chess Association. Adyar Times was established in Chennai in the year 1993, founded by Mr.S.P.Ambrose, IAS (Retd.). The concept of a newspaper for the neighbourhood was a novel idea then. The English weekly (Sunday) now boasts a circulation of 42000 copies with an average of 16 pages per issue.
