The 22nd edition of the Adyar Times FIDE-rated open chess tournament was inaugurated by India’s first International Master, Manuel Aaron, on Aug.23. The event is being held at Jeppiaar University, OMR Road, Semmancherry. The tournament, being held since the year 2000, aims to promote Chess among the youth.
Sponsored by Adyar Times, the neighbourhood newspaper, this annual event organised by the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association has become globally popular. This year, over 355 players are participating from across 17 states in India, along with players from England and Greece.
The total prize fund is Rs. 2.5 lakhs with the champion’s share of Rs. 35,000. There are a total of 40 main cash prizes apart from various category prizes based on the FIDE rating. To encourage the children to participate in this FIDE-rated event, the organizers have announced attractive trophies in the age groups of 8, 10, 12 and 14, separately for boys and girls. Apart from this, special prizes for veterans, women and specially-abled will be awarded.
