The Thiruvanmiyur MRTS Park is currently hosting ‘Aval Idam’, inviting the public to reflect on how women and girls in Chennai assert their presence and agency in public life. Organised by the Greater Chennai Corporation’s Gender and Policy Lab in collaboration with The Kala Collective and Chennai Photo Biennale, the exhibition marks the launch of the Gender Inclusive Manual — a key step towards building a more equitable city.
Inaugurated by Mayor R. Priya, the exhibition features works by 21 accomplished photographers who have captured powerful moments of women navigating, shaping, and reclaiming Chennai’s public spaces. From scenes of leisure and joy to those of work and resistance, the photographs paint a vivid portrait of urban womanhood and the everyday acts through which women claim their rightful space in the city.
The photo series offers a visual dialogue on inclusivity, mobility, freedom, and urban design. It encourages viewers to consider the many ways in which public infrastructure, policy, and social norms intersect with gender.
Visitors to the park can engage more deeply through guided walkthroughs and informal conversations with trained mediators, who will be present morning (6–8 am) and evening (4–8 pm).
Opened till June 15, the exhibition is open to all and free to attend.
