We are Chennai Cyclists across the world are gearing up to celebrate 3rd June as World Bicycle Day. World Bicycle Day attempts to highlight the benefits of using the bicycle as a basic, non-polluting environmentally friendly and sustainable means of transportation. 

As done for the last few years, Chennai Cyclists (WCCG), as one of the largest organised cycling groups in Chennai, once again organises its Mass Cyclothon 2024 on June 16 to celebrate the bicycle and the cyclist in connection with the International World Bicycle Day, to underscore the need for equity and safety for cyclists on Chennai’s roads, and to emphasise the multifaceted benefits that cycling as an activity provides.

In addition to unifying cyclists of all levels across Chennai through this gala event, this year’s Mass Cyclothon has a greater objective- ‘Emphasising the need for Equitable and Safe Roads for Cyclists and other Non Motorised Transportation users.’

“The Chennai Cyclists Mass Cyclothon 2024 is not just a mass event. This is our unified voice to spread the happiness that cycling brings, and to reiterate our right for equity and safety on the city roads. There is strength in numbers, so more participants means louder our demand for Equitable and Safe Roads in Chennai,” their press release stated.

This year’s Mass Cyclothon will have 4 categories:

  • 10 Km and 25 Km categories for beginners
  • 50 Km category for mid-level riders
  • 100 Km for those who want to test their endurance on the saddle

Starting Point: Rani Lady Meyyammai Higher Secondary School, Gandhi Nagar, Adyar. Route information will be shared with all registrants of all categories through emails. Registration fee is Rs.549.

The ride is fully supported with mechanical and medical assistance. Bicycles and helmets can be availed for rent.  For any queries email [email protected]

Adyar Times was established in Chennai in the year 1993, founded by Mr.S.P.Ambrose, IAS (Retd.). The concept of a newspaper for the neighbourhood was a novel idea then. The English weekly (Sunday) now boasts a circulation of 42000 copies with an average of 16 pages per issue.
