To celebrate the cultural heritage and unique crafts of India, and acknowledge the artisans globally, The Department of Tourism, Government of Tamil Nadu is organising Chennai Vizha 2023- International handicrafts, handlooms and food festival till May 14, at Island Grounds. The event will have artisans from India and around the globe to showcase their exceptional handcrafted products and textiles. The 16-day festival is happening for the first time ever in Tamil Nadu to celebrate the traditional and authentic handicrafts, and handlooms of India.
The festival venue will be divided into zones based on the stalls. The Tamil Nadu Zone will have 70 stalls; the national zone has 76 stalls with 19 states and Union Territories participating; the international zone with more than 30 stalls is also expected to captivate the crowd with artisans participating from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. There are about 80 crafts registered with the GI tag (geographical indication) handicrafts that will be displayed during the festival.
The visitors can meet and interact with local artisans who will be demonstrating their skills and techniques and can purchase unique and authentic handicrafts directly from them, supporting local communities and preserving traditional skills.
A fun and educational experience for visitors of all ages, with workshops, talks, and other activities will be conducted to help visitors learn about the history and significance of Indian handicrafts and handlooms.
To make the visual treat more enchanting, the venue will be lively with various cultural programmes representing traditional dance forms across the country ranging from Bharatanatyam to Bhangra and Kathak to Garba, and musical ensemble.
And what’s a festival of culture without the ensemble of delectable food platters? There’s a multi-cuisine food court offering traditional and ethnic delicacies from all over the globe, treating the gastronomical palette of the visitors. Ranging from North Indian chaats to South Indian crunchy snacks, this food festival is set to make the experience extra thrilling and memorable for the visitors.
