In response to increasing public complaints, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is strengthening its enforcement measures against the use of chewable tobacco products within metro trains and stations. The move aims to maintain cleanliness and hygiene, which are often compromised by spitting and littering.
To curb this behavior, CMRL will intensify patrols during non-peak hours and conduct random physical checks at all metro stations, as these products cannot be detected by metal detectors. Platform security personnel and the Central Security Surveillance Room in Koyambedu have been instructed to closely monitor passenger activity and alert on-ground teams to any violations.
Passengers found violating cleanliness and behavioral norms will be fined according to the Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002, and the Metro Railways Carriage and Ticket Rules, 2014. CMRL is urging all commuters to cooperate in keeping the metro system clean, safe, and tobacco-free.
