The birth centenary of Prof.G.S.Ramaswamy, was celebrated with great enthusiasm on Oct.3, at the CSIR Campus, Taramani by the CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre (CSIR-SERC).
The function was presided by Dr.N.Anandavalli, Director, CSIR-SERC. Dr J.Rajasankar, Chief Scientist; chief guest Zacharia George, former Scientist – CSIR-SERC and Principal Structural Consultant of M/s. Pithavadian and Partners; guest of honour Dr.S.Rajasekaran; Dr.G.S.Palani, Chief Scientist; and nephew of Prof.Ramaswamy – Vasanth Balakrishnan, were also present in the event.In her address, Dr Anandavalli, pointed out that civil engineering is all about planning, teamwork, experience and preparing for the unexpected.
“Structural engineering exists in every walk of life, and infrastructure is the backbone of any nation and thus its practices should be environmentally friendly and economical.”

She also briefed about the far-sighted vision of Dr.Ramaswamy which led to the establishment of CSIR-SERC as a national laboratory on 10th June 1965, among his numerous other achievements. Dr.N.Kalaiselvi, Director General, CSIR addressed the gathering virtually and spoke on the example set by Prof.Ramaswamy in his work. Dr.K.Sathish Kumar, Chief Scientist and Head – BKMD, proposed vote of thanks.
