The Tamil Nadu Government has announced a two-month extension for the validity of existing free bus passes and confirmed that the online application system for these passes will soon be implemented across all state transport corporations.
The Minister for Transport and Electricity, S. S. Sivasankar, stated that the existing free bus passes, which were set to expire on October 31, 2025, will now be valid until December 31, 2025.
Key Highlights:
- Pass Extension: The validity of the existing passes is extended by two months (until December 31, 2025) to ensure beneficiaries can travel without hardship while the new system is fully rolled out.
- Online Rollout: Following the successful pilot launch in the Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) on September 7, 2023, the system is now being expanded to all other State Transport Corporations (Villupuram, Salem, Coimbatore, Kumbakonam, Madurai, and Tirunelveli).
- Digital Access: Beneficiaries, including the Differently Abled, Freedom Fighters, and Tamil Scholars, will soon be able to apply for and renew their passes for the 2025-26 financial year online via the government e-Sevai portal (https://www.tnesevai.tn.gov.in/) or at nearby e-Sevai centres.
- Implementation Status: The software development and final-stage works, handled by the Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency (TNeGA), are nearing completion. The full implementation will include necessary district-level camps.
This initiative, executed by the Tamil Nadu Passenger and Goods Transport Corporation (TNMLC) and TNeGA, is intended to provide immediate, hassle-free access to passes for all eligible beneficiaries across the state.
