The World Book Day celebration was held on Apr.23, by the Chennai District Library Committee, at the Gandhi Nagar Circle Library, 4th Main Road, Gandhi Nagar, Adyar, at 4 pm. The event was headed by Prof.Rajesh Khanna. Welcome address was given by C.Chitra, Chief Librarian. Special guests were poets – Samraj, and Anuradha Anand, and writer Narsim. Anuradha inaugurated a section of the library. Felicitation address was given by poets Hari Gopalakrishnan, Pollachi Shanmuganandham and Megar Malika. Children from Diana Matriculation School, Saidapet, also spoke at the event. Eighteen libraries participated in the event.
Narsim expressed his astonishment at the impressive audience of students and their mature speeches which belied their ages. The book he introduced was ‘Raja Vandhar’. Anuradha Anand spoke about accommodating all cultures, because that was how we have been originally. Samraj was thankful to Government Public libraries which he had frequented to quench his thirst for knowledge. All the speakers praised Kamala Kannan, Secondary Librarian, for his good work. Vote of Thanks was proposed by P. Kamala Kannan.
Fifty students were given free membership cards (Rs. 1500), sponsored by Gnyana Prasad. Lawyer Murugan donated Rs.1000 and joined as a member.
