The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has extended the deadline for mandatory pet licensing until Dec.7, 2025, following requests from pet owners and veterinarians.
The extension comes as the GCC intensifies efforts to curb the street dog population through Animal Birth Control (ABC) surgeries and enhances public health measures, including anti-rabies vaccination and microchipping of all pets.
To streamline the process, the GCC launched an upgraded online portal on October 3, 2025, which helps monitor pet and street dog vaccination details and track subsequent vaccination due dates.
Mandatory Microchipping and Free Services
The GCC mandates microchipping and licensing for all pets to ensure owners verify that the annual anti-rabies vaccination (valid for one year) is completed, and to prevent pet abandonment. The microchip records the owner’s name and address.
For the convenience of pet owners, services including microchipping, anti-rabies vaccination, and license issuance have been offered free of cost since Oct.8, 2025, at the GCC’s pet treatment centres and the dog birth control centres.
- Service Hours: These free services are available seven days a week, including Sundays, from 8 am to 3 pm at six GCC pet treatment centres (Tiru Vi Ka Nagar, Moolianthope, Lloyd’s Colony, Ayanambakkam, Kannammapettai, and Minjur) and the Shozhinganallur Dog Birth Control Centre.
- Current Status: As of now, 65,422 pet details have been registered on the GCC portal, and 24,477 licenses have been issued.
Pet owners are strongly urged to utilise this extended period and obtain licenses for their pets before the final deadline of Dec.7, 2025.
