Kalakshetra, a bastion of Indian classical arts heritage, on Feb.28, unveiled the Carnatic Choir as a centrepiece of its 120th birth anniversary celebrations honouring its founder, Rukmini Devi Arundale. Titled Kalakshetra Carnatic Choir – Gita Kala Samanvayam, it also commemorates the centenary of M.D.Ramanathan, a stalwart of Kalakshetra’s music faculty.
Named in reverence to Ramanathan’s enduring legacy, the Carnatic Choir will resonate with compositions by luminaries of Carnatic music, including Mysore Vasudevacharya, Papanasam Sivan, Harikesanallur Muthaiah Bhagavathar, and Tiger Varadhachari.
The Gita Kala Samanvayam promises an exploration of the rich tapestry of South Indian musical genres, facilitated by Kalakshetra’s esteemed training methodologies and pedagogical approaches. From the intricate rhythms of Panchavadhyam to the evocative narratives of Kathakali Padams, and from the contemplative depths of chinth to the vibrant hues of folk melodies, the Carnatic Choir stands as a pioneering initiative within Kalakshetra’s artistic continuum. This collaborative endeavour will witness the convergence of talents, as current students and esteemed alumni of the Music department, alongside the distinguished faculty and specially invited artists, unite to present a harmonious ensemble of voices and melodies. “This momentous occasion underscores Kalakshetra’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding and propagating the cultural legacy of Indian classical music for posterity,” said a statement from the institute.
