V.Deepa, a mother from Blue Bay Apartments, Damodarapuram, Adyar, wanted her son Akash, to spend the summer vacation meaningfully. “We have not yet planned for any hill-station trips, and we didn’t want any summer camp,” she said.
While initially she was clueless how to engage her son, she soon hit upon an idea – why not engage him in making lemonade, put up a stall in the apartment and teach him to sell it. “The main aim of the initiative was primarily for him to develop interaction skills with people and know the value of money,” explained Deepa.

Soon enough, a table was placed in the gates, and Akash was selling lemonade to passersby. Seeing Deepa’s efforts, a few more moms with children joined, and the table was now brimming with a variety of summertime drink options – buttermilk, muskmelon, watermelon, rosemilk, lemonade etc. The prices were kept nominal as this was not a commercial initiative. “As prices were very nominal and the drinks were of good quality, people could afford it easily,” Deepa remarked.
Every morning, children looked forward to the day and excitedly arranged the stall. “This stall is not to make any huge profit, just to engage our kids in a creative, natural way, without any electronic gadgets,” pointed out Deepa.
Catch the young team at the apartment from 11 am to 12.30 pm on all weekdays.
