NIEPMD celebrates International Sign Language Day

NIEPMD celebrated the International Day of Sign Language 2023 (Sept.23), with various programmes organised by the Department of Speech, Hearing and Communication, from Sept.18 – 23.

The inaugural day started with a display of common sign videos developed by Indian Sign Language Research and Training Center (ISLRTC). This was followed by a quiz competition for the HRD students on sign language. On Sept.19, elocution and poster making competitions were conducted for HRD students on the theme ‘A world where deaf people anywhere can sign anywhere’.

On Sept.22, pamphlets and awareness materials on sign language were distributed to the general public, and slogan writing competition was held for HRD students. Students of Bachelor in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology (B.ASLP) and sign language interpreter of NIEPMD visited government schools in Muttukadu to create awareness on sign language. 

On Sept.23, Sign Language Day was celebrated. Dr.A.Amarnath, Deputy Registrar, delivered the welcome address, and Dr.Nachiketa Rout, Director – NIEPMD, delivered the keynote address. This was followed by cultural performance from students of MGR Janaki College of Arts and Science. Mr.Sitaramacharyulu, artist, shared his success story and Mr.Latheef, Executive Committee Member, Tamil Nadu Welfare Board for Differently Abled, addressed the students on the importance of sign language. The week-long program conducted by NIEPMD, helped create awareness about sign language among staff, students, parents and the general public.

Adyar Times was established in Chennai in the year 1993, founded by Mr.S.P.Ambrose, IAS (Retd.). The concept of a newspaper for the neighbourhood was a novel idea then. The English weekly (Sunday) now boasts a circulation of 42000 copies with an average of 16 pages per issue.
