Tambaram witnessed a massive turnout for the Badminton Premier League, National Level Badminton Tournament 2025, with an estimated 800 teams and 1500 to 2000 participants across all age groups. The event showcased talent from the youngest to the most senior players, with the oldest category featuring spirited doubles matches for those aged 80 and above.
In a remarkable display of athleticism and passion, 91-year-old B.M. Viswanathan emerged as the oldest participant in the entire tournament. A long-time resident of Karpagam Gardens (50 years), he has been an avid badminton player since the late 1970s, representing Indian Oil Corporation until his retirement in 1993. For the past 30 years, he has been an active member of the Indira Nagar Sports Club, rarely missing his daily 6 am session.
Teaming up with his partner, 81-year-old Mani Shanmugam, Viswanathan secured the runner-up position in their category. Fellow octogenarians Chandrashekarappa and Narayanan Nair, both 81 years old, also participated with enthusiasm.
Speaking about his enduring love for the sport, Mr. Viswanathan simply stated, “Playing badminton keeps me fit and energetic.” His participation and success at the Tambaram Premier League serve as an inspiring testament to the benefits of an active lifestyle at any age.
