Quantum Computing for everyone

Quantum computing is a predominantly graduate level field. However, Mrithula Saravanan, a high school student, strives to introduce this complex field to students as young as middle school. Recognizing the potential for development in quantum computing, she knew that getting children interested in it would pave the way for growth.

Mrithula’s own interest in quantum computing spurred after being awarded a 100% scholarship to IBM’s program on this topic. This helped her realise her passion and led to her being part of research on quantum chemistry at IIT Madras among many other internships abroad.

To this end, she started introducing this field to students in government schools all over India through The Girl Code. However, she quickly realised the dearth of easy-to-understand books and guides available publicly to help beginners learn and get into quantum— so she did it herself.

By formatting a detailed curriculum and consulting professors and researchers, she watered down esoteric quantum concepts to make it easily understandable to almost anyone outside academia. She then integrated graphic design with her coding skills to make content interactive and challenging through coding notebooks. With this, she published her book, ‘Understanding Quantum Computing: A Beginner’s Guide to a novel up-and-coming field’. Using this, she currently teaches over 50 students across the country.

The book costs Rs.100 and is available on Amazon. However, she also provides free copies for any student interested in this field. Readers can email [email protected] indicating their interest. Mridula is a resident of OMR Kottivakkam and a student of Bala Vidya Mandir, Adyar.
