The Minister of Information Technology and Digital Services, Dr. Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, on Aug.8, inaugurated the revamped Digital Library of the Tamil Virtual Academy. The upgrade enhances the platform’s features, transforming it into a multimedia repository for Tamil language and culture.

The Tamil Digital Library, which began its digitization efforts in 2015, was launched on October 11, 2017. It was created by digitizing rare books, periodicals, and manuscripts from esteemed institutions like the Connemara Library, Thanjavur Saraswathi Mahal Library, and the Government Oriental Manuscripts Library. To date, the library has over one lakh books and periodicals, with more than eight lakh manuscript pages, and has recently surpassed 17 crore views.

The upgraded platform now features an easy-to-use interface, advanced search capabilities, and new functionalities to upload photographs, audio recordings, videos, and maps. It will also serve as a comprehensive source for stone inscriptions in various languages, including Tamil, Brahmi, and Grantha. A new feature allows registered users to upload rare documents they possess, ensuring continuous enrichment of the library’s content.

The digital library remains free to access, allowing users to download and read books and documents at no cost. This initiative plays a vital role in sharing knowledge and promoting Tamil language and culture globally.

The inauguration event was attended by Principal Secretary Thiru. Prajendra Navnit, I.A.S., Director (Incharge) Thiru. R. Komahan, and other key officials. Check out the library at https://www.tamilvu.org/.
