Traffic Diversions Announced for Annai Vailankanni Church Golden Jubilee Celebrations in Besant Nagar

Traffic Diversion in Chennai for Independence Day parade rehearsal

In view of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Annai Vailankanni Shrine, Besant Nagar, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has announced traffic diversions around the area. The celebrations, which begin with the grand flag hoisting ceremony on Aug.29, will continue until Sept.8.

Traffic diversions will be in effect on August 29, 31, September 1, 7, and 8, 2025, or as required, to ensure smooth vehicular movement and public safety.

Key Traffic Diversions:

  • Vehicles from Thiru-Vi-Ka Bridge and S.P.Road heading towards Besant Avenue and the Besant Nagar Bus Terminus will not be permitted via Aavin Park (Muthulakshmi Park). Instead, they must use L.B. Road.
  • Vehicles will not be allowed towards Annai Velankanni Church from the junction of 7th Avenue and M.G. Road.
  • MTC buses from Muthulakshmi Park to Besant Nagar Bus Terminus will be diverted via L.B. Road → Shastri Nagar 1st Avenue (left) → Shastri Nagar 1st Main Road (right) → M.G. Road (left) → Besant Nagar 1st Main Road (left) to reach the terminus.
  • MTC buses from Besant Nagar Bus Terminus towards Thiruvanmiyur and Adyar Signal will be routed through Besant Nagar 1st Avenue → Shastri Nagar 1st Avenue (left) → Shastri Nagar 1st Main Road (left) → M.G. Road (right) to L.B. Road.

The traffic police have urged motorists to cooperate during the celebration period to avoid inconvenience.
