The 21st edition of the Adyar Times FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament was held from Aug.25 to 28 at Bala Vidya Mandir School, Gandhi Nagar, Adyar, Chennai.
The tournament registered participation from 7 states, and players from 5 National Chess Federations (India, Bangladesh, New Zealand, England, USA and India) this year. This renowned tournament organised by the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association carries a total prize money of Rs.2,50,000 and a champion’s trophy, apart from the attractive trophies.
In the Round Swiss event, Master T.Hari Ganesh, a 10th standard student of Velammal Vidyalaya, with 7.5 points out of possible 8, lifted the Adyar Times Trophy, when he edged out FIDE Master M.Vinoth Kumar on account of better progressive score. Apart from the Champion’s trophy, Hari Ganesh received a cash prize of Rs.35,000.
FM M.Vinoth Kumar of Chennai was the runner up and received the cash prize of Rs. 25000; P.Kavishvaran got the 3rd place.
At the felicitation ceremony, J.P.Janakan, Managing Editor of Adyar Times, the sponsor of the tournament, felicitated the winners in the presence of Dr.Srinivasa Raghavan, Principal of Bala Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, S.Paul Arokia Raj, Chief Arbiter and Coordinator of the event, and a host of officials of the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association.
