Public Advisory: WhatsApp Account Hacking Scam Alert by Greater Chennai Police
Share on WhatsappShare on Facebook

The Greater Chennai Police have issued an urgent public advisory regarding a WhatsApp account hacking scam that is currently targeting users across the city.

What’s Happening?

Authorities have reported a surge in complaints about WhatsApp-related scams. In most cases, victims receive a six-digit OTP (One-Time Password) via SMS. Shortly after, they receive a WhatsApp message—either from a random number or what appears to be a known contact—claiming the OTP was mistakenly sent to them and requesting that it be shared.

In reality, it’s a fraudster impersonating a known contact using a fake or compromised account. Once the victim shares the OTP, the hacker gains complete control of the victim’s WhatsApp account.

How the Scam Spreads

Once the hacker takes over an account, they begin messaging the victim’s friends and family, pretending to be in an emergency, like needing money for medical treatment or an accident, and share a bank account or UPI ID (PhonePe, GPay, Paytm, etc.) to collect funds.

Because these messages appear to come from a trusted contact, recipients often send money without verifying, only to later realize it was a scam.

The fraudster may then repeat the cycle, targeting the victim’s contacts using the same technique.

How to Protect Yourself from WhatsApp Hacking Scams

  • Never share OTPs with anyone, even if the request seems to come from a trusted contact.
  • If someone you know asks for money via WhatsApp, always verify by calling them directly.
  • Be aware that fraudsters can impersonate your family and friends.
  • Enable two-step verification in WhatsApp:
    • Go to Settings > Account > Two-step verification and set a secure PIN.
  • If your WhatsApp account is compromised:
    • Re-register your number on WhatsApp using the OTP sent to your SMS. This will log out the hacker.
    • Report the incident immediately to your local Cyber Crime Police Station or register a complaint by calling 1930or online at www.cybercrime.gov.in

Stay Vigilant, Stay Secure

With digital scams on the rise, awareness and quick action are your best defense. Share this message to help others stay protected.
