I am Sreethi Sreedhar, a 7th Grader and a resident of Valmiki Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur. Recently, I came across the indigenous crows falling dead in a mysterious way.
I found the first dead crow on June 27. Following that, I could see the carcasses of crows sporadically in and around Valmiki Nagar. Within one and a half months, I found around 15 dead crows across Valmiki Nagar. With the help of my mother, I approached the Tamilnadu Animal Welfare Board (TNAWB) on the 3rd Seaward Road, Valmiki Nagar, where I was told that they are only the advisory body and pointed fingers at the Forest Department. I contacted the Forest Department too. However, they too eluded, saying that crows don’t come under their purview and pointed fingers at Blue Cross or the Veterinary Department.
Blue Cross says only rescue. Veterinary Department – not in their ambit. Even the corporation people don’t clear the carcasses from the streets. They remain there getting crushed over and over by the passing vehicles. Don’t they spread disease?
I am puzzled! Who is responsible for these poor species? What harm did it cause to be ostracised from being protected? Aren’t they believed to be our forefathers? Aren’t they responsible for our ecosystem? Who will come to its rescue?
Readers, kindly take steps to help these poor species. They fall dying. They seem to be in danger. There may be an outbreak of bird flu. This may lead to the potential spreading of disease in the human community as well.
Protect the crows from disease, and protect them from extinction.
