YMIA Celebrates Dr. Annie Besant’s 179th Birth Anniversary

The 179th birth anniversary of Dr. Annie Besant, the renowned social reformer and freedom fighter who founded The Young Men’s Indian Association (YMIA) in 1914, was celebrated with a garland-laying ceremony on Oct.1.

Members of the YMIA gathered to pay tribute to Dr. Besant at her statue erected on Besant Road, Ice House, near Vivekananda Illam. A separate garland-laying ceremony was also held at her statue on Kamarajar Salai.

Adyar Times was established in Chennai in the year 1993, founded by Mr.S.P.Ambrose, IAS (Retd.). The concept of a newspaper for the neighbourhood was a novel idea then. The English weekly (Sunday) now boasts a circulation of 42000 copies with an average of 16 pages per issue.
