Rotary International District 3234 has launched ‘Sa’iyam’—a major diabetes awareness campaign—kicking off with a 1.8 km walkathon at Elliots Beach, Besant Nagar, on Nov.9, to mark World Diabetes Day. The initiative, whose name means self-restraint or moderation, highlights the importance of balanced lifestyles in managing metabolic disorders.
Led by District Governor AKS Rtn. Vinod Saraogi, the event saw over 650 Rotaractors from local colleges, Rotarians, and volunteers from the Madhav Diabetes Centre participate.
The walkathon was followed by a yoga demonstration and a healthy breakfast. Critically, 106 participants had their sugar levels checked on-site. The campaign continues this week with four days of screening camps planned at Chennai’s major railway stations (MGR, Egmore, Tambaram), Chennai airport, and selected housing societies.
