Shrikant Ram, Kalakshetra Colony.
I live in Kalakshetra Colony on Beach Road. I wish to inform our residents of the increasing crime rate in our area. This incident of mugging is an illustration.
It is my long-time habit to go walking or cycling every day, in the evening, and often at night too.
On Sunday, June 23, I set out as usual at 9 pm for a round. I went to the beach next to Arupadai Murugan Temple, to spend 5 to 10 minutes, enjoying the quietness and the breeze. There had been some rain about half an hour earlier, and so the beach was deserted, save for one person.
In about 5 minutes, two boys came up to me from behind, they would be about 20 to 25 years old. One of them asked me for ten rupees, saying they needed it to get back to Mandaveli. I reached into my pocket and gave him the money. Then the other boy asked for the same. I gave it to him too. Then they asked me for fifty rupees. I told them to forget it and go away. They then asked me if I had a phone. I said no, I don’t carry it around. Then all of a sudden they struck me, with a chopping motion at my neck. I fell and they stole all my money (about 2000 rupees).
Just at that moment, a police car came on patrol. Seeing it, the boys raced away at full speed towards Thiruvanmiyur Kuppam. I related the events to the police official. I thought they would go after the boys, but they started complaining about the bad reputation the police had earned recently, due to the illicit liquor issue. He said if they were to go after the boys, they might earn a bad name!
I then went over to the Thiruvanmiyur Police Station and made a complaint. They said they would look into the matter.
Currently, there is no camera at the entrance to the beach near Arupadai Temple. The one that was there was broken or removed by some people. I hope it can be replaced soon to make the beach safer.
We do want to create some awareness about this and warn people also. Further, on speaking to people we discovered more such instances have happened very recently, a lady’s phone got snatched on Coastal Road, a Kalakshetra Colony security guard was beaten up that same night and a few months back miscreants damaged the CCTV camera at the entrance of the beach and it is still not fixed.

Omg! We have been asking the police regarding the two all terrain vehicles deployed for patrolling the beach to ensure safety of the public. Till now we have neither eceived any response nor seen vehicles. Hope public pressurise for police patrolling the beach on all terrain vehicles bought exclusively for this purpose.
Are we naive to believe police is there to protect?
Well said….are we still so naive Police is police and is not an accomplice to this crime cartel.
The patrolling vehicles are to harass and extort couples. They don’t do any other job
Police forgot their duty long back. Only vasool and Mamool. Nothing more. Keep voting for the drug peddlers and liquor mafia. We all will be safe in heaven or hell.
Human are more dangerous in this society, everyone wants the business in this society without investment, the police is the number one careless on duty.
Chennai back to 80’s style of rowdyism, thanks to police and Govt for making it successfull once again. Welcome back to kattapanchyatu, negligence of cops and involvement in bribery has once again become casual, chain snatching and extortion is frequent on the roads. I dont support any particular political party but still I feel Amma ( AIDMK ) period was the golden period for tamilnadu. Thanks for instilling the fear of dark once again prevail in our streets. Welcome. to Chennai to be robbed and beaten up, cheated, couples on your own risk if you are dating because you and your lover have no guarantee of coming back home safe so better be single and stay at home. Happy living in chennai, lets enjoy every bit of trauma
About 80%police people are corrupt in the society because of corrupt politicians encouraging mafia and and corruption about 40% politicians in india are having criminal background . Your police may not catch the thieves because they are known to police in every day theft history , thieves sharing their booty with police. They are encouraging pick pocket.
Tamilnadu police are worst managed
Pampered by all the ruling parties beyond their status
So sad the IAS Snd IPS enjoy life at the cost of good governance
Police are for the rich and influential. Our next door neighbor bungalow owned by Ananda Vikatan is used for shooting serials and films and they create nuisance and park vehicles all around the place obstructing traffic and free movement of people. Moreover the noise and commotion created by the film unit is unbearable. Our representations to authorities have fell into deaf ears. But we find a police car come every day in the morning and evening to collect mamool from the film unit people to allow them to create the disturbances.
The worst hit people are the middle class because they follow the rules. The lower class used to freebies does not look for work. The maids in the name of supporting the whole family charges exorbitantly. On the whole we have a rowdy rajya run by a rowdy, irresponsible govt.
When the govt can give 2000 rs per head ,they will not take your complaint seriously. Such is the state of corruption.
And this is why they steal in the first place. Maids charge “exorbitantly”?, while your fat ass sits inside the bungalow?. I stay in Kalakshetra colony and have been around the world including the US and EU. Trust me, with the wealth inequality in this country, things could have been much much more damaging for us “honest” tax payers.
The present day environment is not safe for us to go out beyond 7.30/ 8.00 pm. We must be careful at all times as people are upto anything.. Fortunately you are safe, God has helped you.
The present government is the worst in history. Looters and plunderers. No point Is saying anything. It’s a point.of NO RETURN. Tamilnadu is a gone.case. the Dravidian parties have ruined the state
Disgraceful. Pray to god and be happy.
Long.live the politicians and please.cotenfor the same thieves
Good luck.
But sir, well educated affluent class does not step out and stand in que to cast their votes. Obviously freebie beneficiaries stand and que and vote for morons. Otherwise how else can these corrupts can get elected repeatedly despite we all knowing how low their Governance is?
India economy is for rich and influential
BJP RSS loot through policy and laws like GST PMCARE Loan waive off Electroal bonds purchase of MLA MP Create unemployment contract jobs including army
We prople expect safety seecurity for us when we were looted at street. This is condemnable act but what about steeling robbing the economy with laws
Is the article not about TN police and it’s inept Governance. Where does Modi figure in this inaction by local government?
