The Greater Chennai Corporation has, on June 16, issued strict new guidelines banning the use of construction debris and broken bricks for creating sloping connections (ramps) from buildings to roads and pavements. This move aims to curb dust pollution, prevent stormwater drain blockages, and ensure a cleaner city.
Currently, residents and commercial establishments frequently use broken bricks, lime, construction debris, and soil mixtures to create these ramp connections. The GCC pointed out that these materials, apart from generating dust in the air, accumulated in stormwater drains, impeding water flow and causing severe water stagnation on roads during the monsoon season
To address these issues, the GCC advises using eco-friendly materials like wood or metal, effective June 30, 2025. These connections must be safely installed, ensuring they do not obstruct public passage or hinder stormwater drain maintenance. Non-compliance will result in action under the Construction and Demolition Waste Management Guidelines 2025. The full guidelines are available on www.chennaicorporation.gov.in.
The Corporation urges all residents and businesses to adhere to these vital guidelines for a safer and cleaner Chennai.
