The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is appealing for the cooperation of Residents Welfare Associations (RWAs) and apartment associations to ensure the success of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Electoral Roll.
The appeal was made during a meeting conducted on Nov.13 by the Zone 13 Zonal Officer (ZO) to explain the SIR process and address public concerns.
Challenges in Form Distribution
The Zonal Officer highlighted the major difficulties faced by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in distributing the enumeration forms:
- Outdated Data: Forms are based on the 2005 electoral roll, making distribution difficult due to significant demographic changes and shifting residences over the last two decades.
- Accessibility: BLOs struggle to gain entry into many apartment complexes and find families unavailable during working days, preventing door-to-door distribution.
The ZO specifically requested associations to assist in the smooth disbursement of these forms.
Addressing Public Queries
Participants raised several issues, and the Zonal Officer provided the following clarifications:
- Non-Tamil speaking residents found the Tamil-only enumeration form difficult to understand and fill out.
ZO: Residents should seek help from neighbours or RWA members to accurately understand and complete the form in Tamil. - Previous residents have moved out?
ZO: Current residents must inform the BLO, who will update the voter’s status accordingly. - Deletion in case of death?
ZO: Family members should inform the BLO so the entry can be updated in the roll. - More support is needed in lower-income and slum areas where low literacy and working hours pose a challenge.
ZO: While individuals must fill out their own forms, the cooperation of neighbours and local volunteers is essential to help with the process. - For residents who have a Voter ID registered in another state and are no longer living there?
ZO: They must provide the details of their old polling station, including the Assembly constituency, Booth number, and Serial Number, to the BLO for necessary action. - For people in transferable jobs who have not yet received a voter card?
ZO: The BLO must be informed of their status so they can be registered appropriately.
For people who are currently out of station?
ZO: The family members can sign the form and give it. Incase the whole family is unavailable, the same can be updated after Dec.9 online.
