A group of nature enthusiasts are coming together to provide shelters to sparrows, which in the past years have sadly dwindled in numbers due to various environmental challenges.

Twenty-four passionate individuals of various profiles – from homemakers and marathoners to students, teachers, farmers and filmmakers are embarking on an ambitious mission to provide a haven for these beloved birds at Kottivakkam.

This team of ‘Sparrow Ambassadors will serve as beacons of knowledge and enthusiasm, spreading awareness about the importance of sparrow conservation and guiding others on how they too can contribute to the sanctuary project. Over the next 10 weeks, they will be distributing 1000 sparrow homes throughout the Kottivakkam neighbourhood, ensuring ample nesting spaces for our feathered friends.

“Whether you’re a resident, a nature enthusiast, or simply someone who cares about our environment, there’s a role for you to play in Chennai’s first sparrow sanctuary,” said a statement from Hafiz Khan, an environmental activist who is spearheading this campaign, while inviting schools, colleges and corporate to join them in this chirping endeavour.
