The Greater Chennai Corporation has issued a strong warning to pet owners, following a rise in public complaints regarding aggressive dog behaviour. The corporation has mandated strict adherence to new rules to ensure public safety in the city.
According to the new guidelines, it is mandatory for all pet owners to obtain a license from the Greater Chennai Corporation. Owners must also ensure their pets are vaccinated against rabies and are properly cared for with adequate food, water, and shelter.
Pet owners are strictly advised against taking their dogs to public places, including homes, streets, and parks, without a muzzle and a collar with a leash. Violators will face severe consequences. Furthermore, pet owners are responsible for ensuring their dogs do not exhibit aggressive behaviour that may frighten or cause discomfort to the public.
Owners are also instructed to transport only one pet at a time in public spaces and to use a muzzle and leash for the safety of others.
The Corporation has warned that pets without a valid license and rabies vaccination will not be permitted in public areas. Owners are urged to be responsible and mindful that a pet’s behaviour may change in unfamiliar environments, and they must ensure their animal does not cause any disturbance to others, in apartment building lifts and common areas.
Violations of these guidelines, which are based on the rules issued by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), will result in strict action. Owners who allow unlicensed or dangerously aggressive pets to roam freely and intimidate the public will face appropriate criminal legal action.
