Neighbourhood dramatist heaps awards

D.V.Radhakrishnan started Soumya Theatres’ theatre group in 1976. So far, he has written and directed 23 plays for his group and 8 plays for other groups, besides writing more than 30 books.

Many of his plays have won countless awards. In recognition of his service to the theatre world, he was recently awarded with the Literary Thought Award, Karthik Fine Arts’ Lifetime Achievement Award, Chennai Cultural Academy’s Natak Kala Shiromani Award and D.K.Shanmugam Centenary Nadaka Selvam Award. The Lifetime Achievement Award at Mylapore Academy’s 54th Annual Drama Awards was presented on Nov.17 at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.

At the same ceremony, his drama ‘Tharai mel Pirakka Vaithan’, which was staged at the summer drama festival last year in story and verse, also won the award for the best drama of the year.

Adyar Times was established in Chennai in the year 1993, founded by Mr.S.P.Ambrose, IAS (Retd.). The concept of a newspaper for the neighbourhood was a novel idea then. The English weekly (Sunday) now boasts a circulation of 42000 copies with an average of 16 pages per issue.
