World Multiple Sclerosis Day is observed on May 30 every year to create awareness among people to accept and support those affected by this serious ailment.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and has affected 2.8 million people around the world. There is no drug that can cure MS, but treatments are available, which can modify the course of the disease.
NIEPMD observed World Multiple Sclerosis Day on May 30 with a Seminar on ‘Journey with Multiple Sclerosis’. The program was inaugurated by Dr.Nachiketa Rout, Director, NIEPMD. Smitha Sadasivan, Member, State Advisory Board for Persons with Disabilities, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, Ann Gonsalvez, Founding Member & Chairperson, Multiple Sclerosis Society of India, Chennai Chapter and Dr.J.Vijayalakshmy, Senior Consultant Medical Officer, NIEPMD were the Resource persons of the program. The BPT students of NIEPMD demonstrated the physiotherapy techniques for Multiple sclerosis and distributed pamphlets on MS. The staff of NIEPMD, Parents of PwDs, PwDs and HRD students were among those present on the occasion.
