NIEPMD observed World Stroke day from Oct.30 – Nov.3 with a series of programmes. Physiotherapists, speech therapists and other rehabilitation professionals play a vital role in the management of neurological disorders right from onset of the condition to preventive and rehabilitative measures. An awareness rally was organised by HRD students on Oct.30 from Kovalam junction to Kovalam beach. Shobana Thangam Sundar – President of Kovalam Panchayat, flagged off the rally.
On Oct.31, a webinar was organised on ‘Recent Advances for Stroke Rehabilitation’. Dr.Karthick Babu – Principal of College of Physiotherapy (KMCH – Coimbatore) and Dr.Goswami – HoD of All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (Mysore) were resource persons.
On Nov.1, stroke kits were distributed to the persons who are availing stroke rehabilitation services at NIEPMD. Dr.J.Vijayalakshmi, Medical consultant delivered a lecture on Stroke Management. An awareness program was organised on Nov.2 at Chengalpattu Medical College and Hospital for the general public, which included a flash mob, display of models and charts on stroke, focusing on physiotherapy treatment. The Speech Therapy students also conducted awareness in the form of mime for treating swallowing disorders and aphasia.
Throughout the Program, the patients and the general population were explained about the importance of exercise by the Physiotherapist and Speech therapist. The exercises were incorporated in the form of activity based training/Play way methods which motivate the participants to actively perform the exercise.
