Shuttles & Needles, Adyar, a modern weaving studio, recently hosted its ‘Weaving Mela ’25’ on Aug.2 to celebrate National Handloom Day. The event, themed ‘Weaving is Joyful’, brought together about 40 urbanites from various professions and age groups to experience hand weaving as a creative and meditative hobby.
Participants, ranging from an 8-year-old child to a 70-year-old elder, spent three hours weaving on modern looms. They created unique products using traditional Indian motifs, such as Kanchipuram Korvai temple borders and Jamdani designs. The event’s goal was to highlight the creative joy of weaving, promote working with one’s hands, and raise awareness of India’s rich handloom heritage.
Naresh Ramasubramaniam, Managing Director of Shuttles & Needles, explained that modern home looms make it easy for people to create products like scarves and cushion covers. He noted that the repetitive nature of weaving promotes emotional well-being and helps children develop analytical skills.Shuttles & Needles offers modern portable looms, workshops, and yarns for knitting, crochet, and weaving.
