Two young snakes, including a cobra, were recently found in the stormwater drains of Kotturpuram following the heavy rains. Seeking refuge, the snakes entered residential areas, prompting the DP Nagar Residents Association of Dandayuthapani Nagar, Kotturpuram, to take swift action.
Understanding the need for safety for both residents and the snakes, the association organized an awareness session in collaboration with the Irula Cooperative Society, Chengalpettu and the Forest Department. This initiative aimed to eradicate the fear of snakes among residents and ensure no harm came to either humans or the reptiles.
“The area has a significant snake population, and rains often bring them out. Many senior citizens and children frequent the park, which is also a common shelter for snakes,” said Mahendra Kumar, President of the association. He explained that the Irula Cooperative Society safely captured the snakes and released them into the Reserved Forest.
The session educated residents on coexisting with snakes, identifying their behaviour, and taking precautions without causing harm. Kumar urged other neighbourhood associations to seek similar support to foster safety and awareness.
This proactive initiative serves as an excellent example of harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife.
