The Department of Psychiatry of VHS (Taramani) and Rajaji Centre for Deaddiction observed International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26, by conducting an awareness programme at Ramakrishna Mission Higher Secondary School – Malliankaranai, Uthiramerur.
At the event, the students were briefed about VHS and the role of the Deaddiction Centre, Dept. of Psychiatry; the concept of addiction, causes and medical complications of substance abuse; coping skills, management and prevention of substance abuse through role play, activities and interactive sessions; and help-seeking behaviour.
The students were also given tips for the prevention of substance abuse. They participated with full enthusiasm and cooperation. The programme mainly focused on preventive education for youth. Creating awareness about the ill effects of substance abuse and the availability of treatment services were also emphasized. The programme concluded with students taking an oath to strive for a drug-free society and a vote of thanks.
